Problem:
Today, detection of infectious disease is impossible in rural setting. Currently the bacterial infections are detected using blood/stool culture diagnostics. Culture diagnostics requires a full-fledged microbiology laboratory and trained microbiologist to operate. These facilities are only available at the district level hospitals in India. Microbial diagnostics at the rural setting requires not only affordable solution, but also automated to minimize the trained manpower requirement.
Solution:
We have developed a novel device + system that is completely automated and field deployable that can detect bacterial infections called the iMC2 (immuno magnetic cell capture) system. It is a field deployable and automated device that can be used to detect bacterial infections at the primary health care centers. Our technology iMC2 is unique as it combines high tech science “using nano magnetic particles” and it is scalable to produce a large number of single use capture chips.
Scalability and Impact:
Currently this technology has been transferred to a startup initiated by the inventors. We are validating the technology for Typhoid detection. Depending on the validation results, our scale up plans will take shape. By 2017, we will launch the device and capture cassette. At the first phase we would like to work with select state governments or funding agencies to validate the technology in large scale 10000 patients.
